Sono Moon
소노문 (b1982, Republic of Korea)
Through her artwork, Sono Moon explores the experience of living in modern society and delves into the source of unchanging values. She raises questions about what we should let go of in our lives and the sense of loss that comes with it. Her art expresses a deep appreciation for the trivial and small things, emphasizing the value of sharing and cherishing heartfelt experiences. She finds satisfaction in the simplicity of extracting letters and children’s books from old drawers, highlighting the importance of such moments.
One notable aspect of Sono Moon’s artistic style is her emphasis on blank space. She intentionally leaves empty spaces in her artwork to convey a contrast to the prevalent tendency of overfilling in our lives. Through layers of colors, she creates an old Taoist feeling in her art. The overlapping colors give depth and richness to the overall composition, with the initial colors transforming into something entirely different when observed closely. The multitude of colors used in her artwork adds to the vibrancy and visual appeal.
Sono Moon hopes that her art invites viewers to pause and contemplate the significance of quiet moments that are often missing in modern times. Her work encourages reflection on the kind of life she portrays, which may resonate with many people today. She invites viewers to spend time in front of her paintings, allowing the art to evoke thoughts and emotions associated with the serene and meaningful moments that we may be yearning for in our own lives.
