Passage of Time
In order to hold on to the passing of time, we store our memories in our own way. Sometimes one collects things that contain the years, others take pictures, and some write. Moon Seung Yeon draws her own time that she has experienced within a set frame. It is a narrative depicted based on the artist's imagination and memory.
The artist's world is like a fairy tale. And the artist herself dreams of a life like a fairy tale. The time of a fairy tale is fantastic and beautiful when it is inside, but it disappears like smoke when it comes out a little bit. The artist captures that fantastic and beautiful moment. In order to accumulate the best memories so that they can be retrieved someday when life gets tired, and to remain as a memory that can be forgotten but nevertheless can be returned to. This is comforting not only for the artist but also for the audience. Although it is the artist's memory, it becomes a device through which anyone can return to their own time.
The woman and the object appearing in the work somehow unknowingly take the form of a single body. The woman holding the cat has cat ears, and the woman with the bee is wearing a bee suit. A bear is sometimes depicted as a shadow, and a butterfly's wings are sometimes depicted on its back. When the woman holds a teacup, it contains all things. Moon Seung Yeon's early works contain a period of constant anguish and exploration of herself. She
re-examined the meaning of each object and put the most artist-like things on the screen. A faded tone is applied to the entire screen to express the passage of time, and harmonious but eye-catching point colors are added to reveal the artist's individuality. Also, although the background is monotonous, the expression of detailed objects catches the eye.
In recent works, the figure of the woman begins to change. No longer staring at the audience or expressionless. It is expressed in an independent form from the surrounding objects, and a faint smile is seen towards the objects rather than the audience. The color also changes. Soft pastel tones create a comfortable atmosphere and use soft lines to create a cute atmosphere. In addition, the women express movement rather than immobility, leading the audience as if they are heading somewhere. It seems that the author's time of agony is finding the answer. In the meantime, the woman who has appeared in various personas is now facing and accepting herself.
A glimpse into the artist's life in the flow of time is also interestingly delivered to the audience. The artist's inner story and the way her work grows together also suggests the direction of life as a person living in the same time period. Memories of a childhood, the world experienced as an adult, and the people and relationships are the driving force of growth for the artist and
appear in the paintings. The positive and courageous attitude of Moon Seung Yeon, comes as a good message to the audience.
The time that artist Moon Seung Yeon draws contains the artist's constant anguish and a desire to make the world a little better. The artist suggests that you take a moment to pause and to look back and think about your life. Through this, people will try to change the harsh world softly, at least slightly. For the future, people can expect Moon Seung Yeon to fill time in a colorful and meaningful way to capture it in the canvas.
속절없이 흘러가는 시간을 잡아두기 위해 우리는 저마다의 방법으로 세월을 담아둔다. 세월의 흔적이 담긴 물건을 수집하기도 하고, 사진을 찍기도 하고, 글을 쓰기도 한다. 문승연 작가는 정해진 프레임 안에서 스스로가 경험한 자신만의 시간을 그린다. 작가의 상상력과 기억을 바탕으로 기술한 서사이다.
문승연 작가의 세계는 마치 동화 같다. 그리고 작가 스스로도 동화같은 삶을 꿈꾼다. 동화의 시간은 그 안에 있으면 환상적이고 아름답지만 조금만 밖으로 나오면 연기처럼 사라진다. 작가는 그 환상적이고 아름다운 순간을 포착하여 담아내는 것이다. 가장 좋았던 기억이 쌓여 언젠가 삶이 지칠 때 꺼내볼 수 있도록, 그리고 잊혀질 줄 알지만 그럼에도 돌아갈 수 있는 기억으로 남겨두려고 그 찰나의 순간을 기억하고 화폭에 담는다. 이는 작가 뿐 아니라 관객들에게도 위로가 된다. 비록 작가의 기억이지만 누구든지 이를 매개로 자신들만의 시간으로 돌아갈 수 있는 장치가 되기 때문이다.
작품에 등장하는 여인과 오브제는 어딘가 모르게 물아일체의 모습을 하고 있다. 고양이를 안고 있는 여인은 고양이 귀를 하고 있고, 꿀벌과 함께 있는 여인은 꿀벌 옷을 입고 있다. 곰은 그림자로 묘사하기도 하고 나비의 날개는 등에 달고 등장하기도 한다. 찻잔을 들고 있으면 그 속에는 삼라만상이 담겨 있다. 문승연 작가 초기 작업은 이처럼 끊임없이 고뇌하고 스스로에 대한 탐구했던 시간이 담겨 있다. 각각의 오브제들이 담고 있는 의미를 스스로 재조명하며 가장 작가다운 것들을 간추려 화면에 담아냈다. 화면 전체에 빛바랜 느낌의 톤을 입혀 그동안의 시간의 흐름을 표현하고, 조화롭지만 눈에 튀는 포인트 색을 넣어 작가의 개성을 여지없이 드러내고 있다. 또 단조로운 배경을 하고 있지만 디테일한 사물의 표현이 눈길을 사로잡는다.
최근 작품에는 여인의 모습이 변하기 시작한다. 더이상 관객을 응시하거나 무표정이 아니다. 주변의 오브제들과는 독립적인 모습으로 표현하였으며, 관객이 아닌 오브제들을 향한 옅은 미소가 보인다. 색감 역시 변화가 있다. 은은한 파스텔톤은 편안한 공기를 만들고 부드러운 선을 이용하여 아기자기한 분위기를 연출한다. 또한 여인들이 부동의 자세가 아닌 움직임을 표현하여 어디론가 향하는 듯 관객을 이끈다. 이는 작가의 고뇌의 시간이 해답을 찾아가는 듯 보인다. 그동안 다양한 페르소나가 되어 등장한 여인이 이제는 스스로를 마주하며 받아들이는 것이다.
시간 흐름에 담긴 작가의 인생을 엿보는 것 또한 관객에게는 흥미롭게 전달된다. 작가 내면의 이야기와 작품이 함께 성장하는 모습은 동시대를 살고 있는 사람으로써 삶의 방향을 제시하기도 한다. 어린 시절에 대한 기억과 추억 그리고 성인이 되어 경험한 세계, 그리고 만난 사람들과 인연들은 작가에게는 성장의 원동력이 되어 그림에 나타난다. 위기를 극복하며 삶을 개척해가는 문승연 작가의 긍정적이고 용기있는 태도가 관객에게는 선한 메시지로 다가온다.
문승연 작가가 그리는 시간은 작가의 끊임없는 고뇌와 세상을 좀 더 이롭게 하고자 하는 마음이 담겨있다. 잠깐의 멈춤으로 자신을 돌아보고 삶에 대해 생각하는 여유를 가져보자고 제안한다. 이를 통해 미약하게나마 각박한 세상을 부드럽게 바꾸려 노력한다. 문승연 작가가 앞으로 남아 있는 많은 시간을 다채롭고 의미있게 채워 화폭에 담아내길 기대해본다.
