Kwan-Young Kim constructs abstract landscapes of memory and emotion, translating the invisible processes of the unconscious into delicate layers of color and line. His ongoing series The Memory of the Unconscious embodies his exploration of what remains after time and perception fade. Educated at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, Kim combines a European sensibility for material and structure with an Eastern sensitivity to rhythm and restraint. Each canvas unfolds as a map of traces—thin color fields, translucent veils, and filament-like lines that seem to float between appearance and disappearance. These subtle accumulations mirror the way memories overlap, dissolve, and resurface within the mind. Working patiently through layering and erasure, he creates surfaces that feel both temporal and meditative, inviting the viewer to sense the passage of time rather than see it. The palette, composed of muted pastels and neutral tones, radiates quiet tension and emotional depth. Kim’s works have drawn attention across Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong for their universal language of abstraction—neither purely Western nor Eastern, but deeply human. His paintings serve as visual cartographies of remembrance, where the act of looking becomes an encounter with one’s own inner landscape.
