The reason I cannot call longing “longing” is that when the words of longing come out into the world, they all break apart like falling meteors.
The time of shadows that are sealed and confined, slowly disappearing until one day even I no longer know them...
“Everything in the world is full of longing.”
Does such a place truly exist?
A certain time when the pain of needles piercing the entire body is forgotten.
A time of joyful tears even after hanging upside down and losing consciousness several times.
Today, I moved ten meters in four hours. After countless agonies and pains, and a very brief sleep, there came awakening, joy, clarity of consciousness, and a natural stimulant like wild mint growing by a stream. My thoughts grow by 1mm when I discover something flower-like in another person.
No, in fact, if I look at things that way, I can see it in everyone. If I do not clear it away even for a single moment, the lake I have becomes clouded.
Even after finishing my work, I cannot make the slightest movement or stand up, because I am afraid that this peace of silence and stillness might disappear.
Abstract painting is more honest than a face, and more naked than the naked emperor. I am like a squirrel hiding in a tiny hole, barely sticking its head out and watching what is happening outside, but at the same time, the gift of becoming a torch among the stars also comes to me.
Then what will I choose? Most people travel like that and disappear. If so, are there really torches among the stars? But if someone says that he himself is the torch, then it is already an extinguished torch, a dead torch. I must simply remain silent and keep walking. Toward a door that must exist somewhere, I move like a snail and struggle for three hours just to stand up once. On such days, I tidy the house, put my body and mind in better order, and then sit in front of the canvas,
as if today were the last day of my life.
### The Time of Dissolution and Circulation
*The Consolation of Philosophy*
“Philosophy is a doctor who reads and heals the pain of the age and the wounds of the human soul.”
— Nietzsche
Koo Kwangmo’s works hurt.
There is no particular academic structure, and no narrative is visible, but the inner story thrown down with a “thud” feels like my own, and I fall deeply into the abyss. As I follow the many layers of color and the brushstrokes that dance roughly and then erase themselves, I seem to be drawn beyond the inside of the painting as if I were breathing. Soon, stillness echoes in all directions and wraps around me so tightly that I cannot move. In that mysterious experience, I encounter a self that feels unfamiliar yet familiar, and suddenly tears begin to flow.
His works remain in an endless hell of sorrow in which self-abuse and self-pity repeat infinitely, then speak of pilgrimage, forgiveness, light, and eternity, and heal themselves. The rough wounds and traces on his canvases, which were once the desperate ground for self-reflection, are emptied through the light of meditation and through the ascetic practice of painting over and erasing, painting over and erasing, until they meet silence.
When I encounter that silent stillness, I close my eyes and listen to the sound of my own breathing.
I see myself.
I exist, and at the same time I am disappearing……
Koo Kwangmo’s work does not make us understand the nature of life as contradiction and the necessity that it must be denied. Rather, it encourages us to affirm life itself and further stimulates us to create our own lives. Even in front of the abyss, it conveys a mood of overflowing and ascent that throws itself forward without fear, and it performs an act directed toward transcendence. In this way, the work becomes *The Consolation of Philosophy*.
The “stories of an instant” encountered as if brushing past the painter’s canvas allow each viewer to encounter their own “self,” to fully feel the pain of their own wounds, to encounter their own desires and their own frustrations, and in that transparent time, to embrace themselves and be led toward peace.
For the painter, art is the process through which he comes to realization. In the journey of constantly asking questions and searching for answers, the inner self becomes stronger, and one can gain consolation that does not easily waver under any circumstance. Like Nietzsche, the work attempts to overcome decadence and recover a healthy life by turning philosophy into art.
We are all in pain. Everyone has become tired and depressed. Unemployment and closed businesses, isolation in relationships… People are collapsing helplessly in the face of rapid social change to the extent that the phrase “COVID blues” has become part of everyday life.
At times like this, we turn our attention toward things that do not change, toward what is essential, and find consolation in them. Philosophy continually questions values that were once regarded as absolute, reflects on the self, and helps us live a new life. Only through such a process does the inner self become firm, and only then can we obtain consolation that does not waver.
Art allows us to practice such philosophy.
Through such an act, the artist and the viewer become a source of consolation for one another.
The Consolation of Philosophy>
