QWAYA

콰야

Qwaya, born in 1991, is a contemporary artist from South Korea. His artistic pseudonym derives from the Korean word “過夜” (passing the night) and the initials of “Quiet, Quest,” symbolizing a journey through the night and a contemplative search for tranquility. Qwaya’s art is primarily centered around themes of solitude and silence, expressed through a distinctive painting style that captures the emotions and reflections of everyday life. He delicately portrays daily sentiments with the sensitivity of a diary, attracting attention with his unique brushwork and liberated artistic expression.

In his works, figures often appear with unreadable expressions, inviting viewers to delve into the deeper emotions and symbols they convey. Qwaya explores the complex layers of feelings experienced in solitude and silence, making his art not just a visual encounter but a bridge for emotional dialogue with the audience. In a fast-paced and ever-changing society, he takes a contrary path, slowing down to reflect on the importance of 'today,' conveying intimate stories and time-bound imagery of societal change in his works.

Throughout his career, Qwaya has participated in numerous significant projects and exhibitions. In 2019, he gained widespread recognition after designing the cover for the second album of South Korea’s renowned indie band, Jannabi. His swift rise in the art world has been marked by 15 solo exhibitions and over 40 group shows, with his works almost always selling out during exhibitions. This success underscores his immense potential as a young and innovative artist. Qwaya's work, initially celebrated in the Korean art scene, has steadily gained international recognition, establishing him as a prominent figure in the current wave of East Asian contemporary art.
